Are you curious about the benefits of mobile canning versus buying your own canning line? I’ve summarized the benefits of mobile canning as compared to in-house canning in what I have called the “4 C’s”; Capital, Care, Capacity, and Capability.
A similarly capable automated canning line equipped with conveyor systems, depalletizers, and a pack out station starts in the $200,000 range and quickly escalates. While stand-alone canning machines can be purchased from Cask or Wild Goose at lower cost, this price does not include the additional equipment needed to exceed the capabilities of a mobile canning service. Additional capital is also required for training, site preparation, installation, spare parts, a clean-in-place solution and more. When does it make sense for a brewery to go with an in-house canning solution? Each brewery takes into consideration different factors; however it is our estimation that a brewery needs to can in excess of 70,000 cans per month. A brewery needs to ask itself, is the cost worth the benefit or could that amount of money and resources be better used elsewhere in the brewery?
Once you’ve considered the capital costs of a canning line, now add in personnel, maintenance, and repair costs. It is common knowledge that packaging equipment is very maintenance and repair intensive. Wouldn’t you rather let someone else worry about that? We stock commonly required spare parts in order to minimize down time. In the event of a significant failure or repair need, Old Dominion Mobile Canning has a second canning line to use. In the brewery owned scenario, a significant failure could delay canning for days or weeks waiting on spare parts and repair service, if needed.
A single mobile canning unit can process up to 7 barrels per hour. At Old Dominion Mobile Canning, should the brewery have the space and resources, we can run our two Wild Goose MC-250 canning lines in parallel thus providing the capacity to process up to 14 barrels per hour. Presently there is no small footprint canning line option that can provide this capacity even at twice the price point. Even with only one mobile canning line, there are no other small footprint canning solutions that can beat our throughput. Ask yourself if you really want to spend the capital to purchase a canning solution that will not exceed what mobile canning delivers.
Mobile Canning affiliates have canned over 12,000,000 cans in North America since 2012. That is an unmatched experience base which Old Dominion Mobile Canning leverages and has significantly contributed to. As of September 30 we have canned over 2.4 Million cans. That’s a lot of experience. Over this time our experience has been leveraged to troubleshoot and repair most canning line problems. We also have the experience and knowledge of successfully canning beer in many different conditions and specifications. But we don’t stop there; as a Mobile Canning Systems Affiliate we have access to industry experts and training that allow us to provide more capabilities and higher quality. Our Wild Goose canning line allows us to switch from 12 to 16 oz size cans in under an hour; some manufacturers lock you into one size or another. Lastly, we offer different can solutions for unique needs; be it design and approval help with pre-printed cans, shrink-sleeve labels, hybrid cans, or self-adhesive labels; we can provide options to fit your needs.
So before you buy that canning line, take a minute, consider the factors, and talk to us. We’re happy to be of assistance and want to help you get canning. Then, when and if the time is right, graduate to in-house canning like several of our past clients have. But graduation doesn’t mean good-bye; know that we are available to help with future canning needs, materials, or advice. Your success is our success.
